What to expect with your first massage

Getting a massage for the first time can be a daunting experience, but it doesn't have to be. At Glasgow Holistic Massage, we understand that you may have some questions about what to expect, so we've put together this blog post to help you feel more prepared.

Before your massage

When you book your massage, you will be asked to fill out a consultation form. This is a great opportunity to tell the massage therapist about your medical history, any injuries or pain you have, and your goals for the massage. For example, if you're looking for a relaxing massage to relieve stress, or if you need a deeper massage to work out some tension in your muscles, the therapist can adjust their technique accordingly.

On the day of your massage

When you arrive at your massage appointment, you will be greeted by the therapist and taken to a private room. You will be asked to remove most of your clothes, but to keep on your pants/underwear. The therapist will leave the room so that you can get undressed in privacy and feel comfortable. If you have time, a hot bath before a massage session can maximise your time on the table!

Once you are ready, the therapist will return to the room and begin the massage. They will usually start by warming up the muscles with light strokes. Then, they will use various techniques to massage different areas of your body, depending on your needs and time allowed.

During the massage

If you feel any discomfort at any time during the massage, please be sure to tell the therapist. They will be happy to adjust the pressure or technique. You are also free to ask the therapist to focus on certain areas of your body, or to avoid certain areas if you prefer. Feedback is valued and the therapist may ask you on a scale of 1-10 how intense the massage is.

After the massage

After the massage, the therapist will leave the room to enable you to get dressed in privacy. You may feel a little bit sleepy or groggy, so it's a good idea to drink plenty of water. You may want to leave your diary free or else book an evening slot for maximum relaxation.

Here are some additional tips for getting the most out of your first massage:

  • Arrive on time for your appointment so that you have enough time to get comfortable and relax.

  • If feasible, a hot bath with epsom salts before a massage session can help your muscles further relax by the time you’re on the table.

  • Communicate with your therapist about your needs and preferences.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for more or less pressure, or to focus on certain areas of your body.

  • Drink plenty of water before and after your massage.

  • Take a nap if you feel sleepy or groggy after your massage.

We hope this blog post has helped you to feel more prepared for your first massage with Glasgow Holistic Massage. We look forward to helping you relax and rejuvenate!
